what does gmmps tag editor say for supertramp and the others. It looks like their sort tags on your device are also set to mann, aimee The Album Artist and Album Artist Sort tags on all tracks on that album are set to Aimee Mann and Mann, Aimee, respectively. The Artist and Artist Sort tags are set to the individual artists. My understanding from reading other posts is that's how they should be to get the desired sorting.
Edit: added attachments. Should GoneMad be displaying the Sort tags? I've never seen Sort fields in either the tag editor or the Song Info display.

the sort tags show in the tag editor when selecting from the artist or album artist list. Sort tags are applied to the entire artist and cannot be done on a per album basis

the sort tags show in the tag editor when selecting from the artist or album artist list. So I should be able to edit the Artist and Album Artist sort tags in your tag editor? I've just been assuming you didn't implement editing those since those fields are missing for me. If that's the case, maybe foobar is doing something weird with the sort tags. If foobar is messing them up, though, then I don't understand how your app is using them properly for displaying every other artist in my collection, from what I can tell. Can you recommend a tagging app I can use to inspect my files? But shouldn't the Album Artist Sort tag be applied in the Album Artist list? Why would it show "Supertramp" between two artists starting with "M"? The common denominator is that one album with Album Artist "Mann, Aimee" on all of its tracks happens to have "Supertramp" as two tracks' Artist tag.
Just now, I also edited the two Supertramp albums to set all four tags (Artist, Album Artist, Artist Sort and Album Artist Sort) to "Supertramp", but their name still shows up after Mann, Aimee in the Album Artist list, instead of under "S". Would it help if I sent you some of the mp3 files to check?

I’ve used mp3tag for years, but I understand from others that foobar works for them.

so i'll first say the sort tags are not heavily tested. i do not personally use them\ secondly yes you can edit the sort tags in the tag editor, but if you didnt do any editing using the in app editor, then there might be an issue with the sort tags in the scanner(in this case multiple diff sorts in a single album). Could you sent me that album so i can see whats going on in the scanner

I don't normally use the app for editing, but I occasionally look at the editor when I'm having issues, and today I checked several random songs to see if the fields were available. How should I get the album to you?

From what I have seen, the sort tags are only listed in the specific lists when browsing. For example, the Albumsort tag can be seen when in the album list, long press and edit the tag for the album itself. Same for the AlbumArtist and Artist sort tags. I don’t think I have seen any sort tags when long press or meatball menu selecting the tag editor.

So yes, I can see those sort tags now. I went ahead and saved the artist and album artist sort tags for both Aimee Mann and Supertramp with GoneMad, but it didn't change either listing.

@elgee I've checked this with a couple of albums that have a compilation that I do NOT have "Various Artists" as the Albumartist tag. The album "Encomium" is a tribute album encoded in mp3, with the Albumartist as "Led Zeppelin" and many individual track artists including "Sheryl Crow" Artist and the Artistsort as "Crow, Sheryl" tagged. Another album "Nashville Outlaws" by "Mötley Crüe" / sort "Motley Crue" is in lossless AAC format (ALAC) and also has all tracks with different artists. All are in the correct place as expected in the lists.
Perhaps deleting the library database, then starting a new scan to reload the tags would help?

I have a sorting issue. I have a soundtrack album where Album Artist is Aimee Mann, and four tracks are by three other artists. I have Aimee Mann set as Artist for all the other tracks, and I use Artist Sort and Album Artist Sort accordingly on all tracks. Those four other tracks are by Supertramp,Jon Brion and Gabrielle. In the Album Artists list, Supertramp is showing up in the "M"s, between Aimee Mann and A.C. Marias. In the Artists list, all three of the additional artists are between Mann and Marias. Any ideas? I had a similar issue a while back and I think it's because I only use the tag AlbumArtistSort in my metadata and don't use the ArtistSort tag at all, since I almost always browse my library by AlbumArtist and never really browse by Artist. The only way I could find to fix it was by changing the order that I scanned the files in. Basically I have many albums with AlbumArtist = The Magnetic Fields and AlbumArtistSort = Magnetic Fields, The. But I also have an album with AlbumArtist = Stephin Merritt, which is a compilation where some of the tracks have Artist = The Magnetic Fields. From what I can tell when the Stephin Merritt compilation was scanned in first the AlbumArtistSort and ArtistSort for The Magnetic Fields was set to The Magnetic Fields (instead of Magnetic Fields, The) in the GoneMad library since there was no ArtistSort tag (this is my speculation of course). So when the files with AlbumArtist = The Magnetic Fields and AlbumArtistSort = Magnetic Fields, The were scanned in after the Stephin Merritt album, the AlbumArtistSort tag remained The Magnetic Fields and showed up under the T's, despite what was displayed in the tag editor. So what I did: 1. Deleted the library 2. Deleted every Stephin Merritt album from my phone except one album that had AlbumArtist = Stephin Merritt and AlbumArtistSort = Merritt, Stephin for all tracks 3. Scanned all files and saw that The Magnetic Fields were now showing up under M's as expected 4. Added the rest of the Stephin Merritt albums back to my phone and scanned again I think this set the AlbumArtistSort to Magnetic Fields, The on the initial scan, so when the tracks later were scanned that had Artist = The Magnetic Fields it didn't affect the sort tag. Sorry if this is confusing, but it took me a while to figure this out. You use ArtistSort tags on some tracks so this may not solve all of your issues, but thought it could be a good place to start. You could try deleting the Aimee Mann album and scanning everything but that to see if Supertramp shows up under the S's as expected, and then add the Aimee Mann album back in and rescan. This does require deleting the whole library first though.

your issue was probably related to the fact that artist and albumartist are actually all stored in a single artists database table since most artists are also the albumartist. This presents an issue when using the sort tags if one (artistsort/albumartistsort) is defined and the other isnt. Depending on the scan order.. diff values could end up in the db. If the sort tag is not set.. the artist/albumartist (accordingly) tag is used instead. The sort values are only set in the database when first added (or edited through the tag editor)

This presents an issue when using the sort tags if one (artistsort/albumartistsort) is defined and the other isnt. Depending on the scan order.. diff values could end up in the db. I'm pretty sure I added Aimee Mann's albums (including that soundtrack) first, then later the Supertramp ones, and at that time, the Supertramp albums didn't have either sort tag. After recreating the database today, they sorted correctly, but I had also by that time added the extra tags to the Supertramp albums.
This would also be an edge case in my collection, because I think I only have one other album with this particular combination, where an album has the Album Artist as a band (not "Various Artists"), has other artists on the album, and I also have albums by those other artists in my collection.
Unfortunately after recreating the database, I have to manually reset all my images for artists that are in folders with a Sort name ("Rolling Stones, The")!
