I'm sorry I didn't say I'm using MP4/AAC, encoded in foobar with the nero aac encoder (so I think foobar does the tagging). But I tested some MP3 made the same way and they don't work either. I looked into the matter a little deeper, just to discover that AAC uses nor TXXX and neither POPM, but its own "tagging" system. I tried using the "almost conventional" meta "RTNG", but had no luck. Does GMMP support reading tags from AAC files, other than the most common ones? In which tag does it look for the rating?
I thought the program mp4v2 might come in handy in checking the actual metadata but I haven't had the time to try it, as I'm in windows atm.
anyway you're so damn right! in fact in my library I use a -1 to 6 rating! (don't worry, there's method in my madness) It surely isn't standard, but I love the freedom foobar gives me in this regard.

POPM's scale is 0-255 and RATE is 0-100 sourceforge.net/p/mediainfo/bugs/793/"So in conclusion, to sum it up: "rate" = Popularity Rating or just Rating (should not be 'clean' or 'explicit', but rather a number between 1 and 100). "rtng" = Lyrics Advisory Rating or just Advisory (this should be either 2 = 'clean' or 4 = 'explicit'). "iTunEXTC" = Content Rating (non-standard field that displays 'PG', 'NC-17', etc...)."

writing RATE with mp3tag doesn't work either, but I checked with atomicparsley (http://atomicparsley.sourceforge.net/) and saw it's set correctly according to the itunes "standard". I also tried setting RTNG with atomicparsley, no luck. There are no rating presets anyway.
So I'll rephrase: 1) in which form should the m4a/mp4 rating tag be, for GMMP to correctly read it? 2) Which windows program should I use to put a rating tag which GMMP can read, in m4a/mp4 files?
thanks a bunch

I would think players like foobar, mediamonkey, or musicbee would correctly tag mp4.. those are typically the pc games that GMMP users use (at least the ones that have contacted me in the past)

this was driving me nuts! everything I tried didn't work until I realized the rating tag isn't read at all, unless you scan the library directory (why is that???) so.. setting the RATE tag with foobar works! thanks for helping me out
