I have also examined the popm tag for Media Monkey and Music Bee and just as in Winamp, a rating of 3 equates to 128. I checked on Wikipedia and found this under ID3:
However, there is a "Popularimeter" frame in the ID3v2 specification meant for this purpose. The frame is called POPM and Windows Explorer, Windows Media Player, Winamp, foobar2000, media monkey and other software all map roughly the same ranges of 0–255 to a 0–5 stars value for display.
The following list details how Windows Explorer reads and writes the POPM frame:
224-255 = 5 stars when READ with Windows Explorer, writes 255 160-223 = 4 stars when READ with Windows Explorer, writes 196 096-159 = 3 stars when READ with Windows Explorer, writes 128 032-095 = 2 stars when READ with Windows Explorer, writes 64 001-031 = 1 stars when READ with Windows Explorer, writes 1
I will check on other ratings.

Sounds like someone was smoking crack when they set that up edit: im curious if this is something that was standardized more recently.. i wrote the tag reading code like 2 years ago and at the time i had to scour the forums of individual players to determine how they wrote the ratings. Im fairly certain i tested all star ratings with windows media player too anyway i can make those adjustments fairly easily

Well, you thought that was crazy, get ready for more. I rated songs from 0 to 5, in 1/2 star increments, and than examined the popm tag. Here are the results:
Rating _ MMonkey _ MusicBee 0 _ 0 _ No POPM .5 _ 13 13 1 1 1 1.5 54 54 2 64 64 2.5 118 118 3 128 128 3.5 186 186 4 196 196 4.5 242 242 5 255 255
Yes, you are reading correctly. The rating of 1 is a "1". I initially tested with metamp3, but because of the 1 rating, I checked again with mp3tag. The results were the same.
Media Monkey also has a rating "Unknown" which removes the popm tag. This is what MusicBee did with rating "0".

at least the other numbers are consistent between the 2.
I think i understand the 1 being 1.... i think its for compatibility reasons. There were some players that used to just tag 1-5 in the POPM tag (which GMMP accounts for).. so basically <=5 you take the number at face value.

Hi,
I've been trying to figure out how to display the song rating in the track list, so that you don't have to delve into the 'track details' menu first, but it doesn't seem to be possible. Can this be done, or if not, could this option be included in the next update?
I have a library of 20,000 or more different tracks and the only way I can ever remember which ones I like is to give them all a star rating. But it's a total pain in the neck to have to long-press on every track name to find out what that rating is; it would be so much quicker to have the information on display (or at least the option to do so) Surely it can't be difficult to show ratings alongside the track name?
Thanks.

Are you planing to make any modification to import ratings properly from the tags of the most used taggers?

Is it possible to use the ID3 tags for song ratings in GMMP instead of the separate XML database? My ratings are getting lost in syncing/batch editing processes and I use the same music database on various android devices via samba mounting. Is an alternative to just sync that xml file across devices?
Thanks for the amazing software!

eventually. my original attempts at having GMMP save ratings into tags presented some issues that i just didnt have the time to deal with so it was indefinitely pushed back

Hi thanks for the great player! I'm an happy customer, but have an issue with the RATING tag I saved in Foobar/mp3tag: they're ignored by the player. Everything's ok with the main tags.
I'm not sure I understand how tagging works, but for sure foobar does not use the POPM frame of mediamonkey. It uses TXXX instead. Right? Is there any way that GMMP could read foobar tags? OR do you know of any tool which I could use to translate the tags from foobar into GMMP "language"? many thanks
BTW, I support the request for adding custom tags to the library =)

POPM is at least a standard so you know its between 0-255.. but for TXXX is it 0-10, 0-100, 0-5, etc? i'll add it to the request list but i still recommend using the official tags
