I have some 'various artists' albums which I put to my database title by title. That is, for each artist of that album I created a separate folder to which I added all his titles. Anyway, all the titles do carry the same album tag. Now, when browsing by albums, gmmp doesn't recognize all those titles as belonging to the same album. Instead, gmmp is showing a v-e-r-y long list under 'albums' because each title is listed with a single entry, that is, the same album appears n times. Would you mind fixing that?

You need to use the album artist tag if you want them to be grouped together or put the songs into the same folder. Grouping by album name alone is not a valid technique. What if you have 2 albums with the same name but different artists? Those should not be grouped into a various artist album
