hi I am looking for a media player for my music and audiobooks, and I do find GMMP to be a great choice for this. The very last thing before deciding would be to understand how to get back to the last listened position in my audiobook, if I am moving away to listen to music. The problem is that the audiobook has dozens (sometime more then hundred) mp3 files, and I could not figure out if there is any way to make GMMP remember to the file it self and the position in the file. Or at list show which was the last bookmark. Or anything to get back to the last position where I was.... It might happen I do not understand fully the bookmarking functionality of GMMP. Any Idea from anyone?

In now playing you can click menu -> bookmark and it will save your position. When you go back to the file it will resume at that position

What if he doesn't remember which of the many similarly named files he was listening to?

keeps trying files until he finds the right one?
I'll probably add in a bookmark tab to show the saved bookmarks but not for awhile. There is too much other stuff i have to do first

Please consider prioritizing work on bookmarking, it's the most irritating almost-works feature of GMMP. Aside from lack of a list of bookmarked shows (nice feature but not critical), it's just plain old inconsistent. Mine constantly tries to play bookmarked files from the beggining. Sometimes I can pause and play again (seems that holding the play button helps) to get the bookmarked position, and other times it won't work at all and I lose my position completely. Just from jumping between shows which I autobookmark (love that time based feature!) and music in my queue.

i've never once experienced issues with the bookmarking and i've done some extensive testing (i had a user not understand how they work and thought it was broken maybe a month or 2 ago). You are using it correctly right? You just have to flag a song as being bookmarked and then thats it (if you are using the auto bookmark long songs or auto bookmark songs in a specific folder you should never have to do anything).. If you click the bookmark option again (it should get labeled as unbookmark), your spot will get lost
Long pressing the play button should actually stop playback and certainly shouldnt help with bookmarking at all.. Pausing and playing does not trigger anything with bookmarks either (nothing that would restore its position). Only track changes trigger anything bookmark related. So it sounds like something is weird about your install. I would recommend uninstalling and reinstalling the app. The android installer sucks and some updates corrupt the player causing weird bugs that are only fixed with a uninstall / reinstall
You can backup/restore playcounts / ratings / settings via prefs -> general -> backup
You can send in an error report before you reinstall if you want. prefs -> general -> error log -> send report. Maybe you are using some odd setting combination that would cause an issue but im pretty doubtful.
As for priority, fixing bugs is always the top but unless I can reproduce an issue there is nothing i can do. I have around 46 test devices now so if there truly is an issue i should be able to reproduce it on one of them

Yes, I have "songs" over 20 minutes AND the folder which they all tend to be in set, and it works "some of the time". I think I need to get out my camera and just record a minute of me hopping around the app to show you how it misbehaves. I just paid for the app yesterday, so I'll save my settings and un/reinstall, then try to record it (if it still happens) so you can whitness. This is on a Galaxy S3 on Verizon, up to date, no other issues. That's quite a collection of test devices, very impressive! I'll shoot you an error report now - may not help, but best done before I lose any trace of it. Thanks for being responsive, it's fantastic. Error report is blank but I assume it attaches other useful logs. Title will be "flaky bookmarks".

i fortunately have the verizon s3 as my main phone so i'll have the best chance of being able to reproduce what you are seeing
edit: yea the error log.. even when blank, shows me all the preference you are using.. so i'll typically just match the settings and try to reproduce

Any "luck"? If holding play "stops" the song, that seems to be the trick. It also has a hard time remembering my last position if I just pause playback then never return before the timeout kills the whole app. When I come back I'm often trying to figure out where I was becuase I have either started at 0:00 again or it is at a previous bookmark. It seems like it should set a bookmark every time you pause or switch tracks but.. doesn't always get it right. ?! Also... is there any way to enable email notifications from this forum?

i havent looked into it more because i was waiting for you to get back to me after doing the reinstall to see if it was still an issue. If you are using the music service timeout that MIGHT explain things. The bookmark only saves on track change because the currently playing track's position gets restored automatically when the player starts up
If the following happens i dont think the bookmark will save: play a song that should be bookmarked, pause, exit the player completely or let the music service timeout, start the player back up and immediately select another song to play.
The simple solution i think would just to be bookmark when the service shuts down.
If you see any cases where the bookmark is not saved that wasnt the scenario i mentioned above, let me know.. otherwise i'll get that fix into the next patch

i looked into it a bit more and it seems the bookmarks work correctly for the most part when crossfade is on.. but not so consistently when crossfade is off.. i typically leave cf on so maybe thats why i did not see the issue
edit.. annnnndd now i cannot reproduce it after turning crossfade back off... software is annoying sometimes
edit2: this is a wild bug. It will only occur if the crossfade setting was never touched. In the code, there was a mistake in a small chunk of code that assumed crossfade was on by default if the preference wasnt set.. this caused the bookmarks to get improperly restored
I will try to push out the update tonight.. if not just turn crossfade on then off and the functionality should work much better

OK I'll try to pay more attention to when it happens, but it does seem to fit that pattern of timing out and/or starting a new track immediately when starting again later.
I'll try toggling crossfade - pretty sure I already tried that once before, didn't need it so didn't want the overhead. (I assumed that it must, at least temporarily, require another buffer(s) to load the 2nd song and do it's magic for a few seconds).

the update i pushed (1.4.16.4) should fix the bookmarking
crossfade is a little more overhead.. the next song already gets preloaded for gapless playback.. but with crossfade you will have 2 songs decoding for that short period of time where they overlap

Good point. So I went back to switching between long shows and music in your app. This morning I paused a 3 hour show and 22 minutes and let it time out. I turned on the phone later, clicked the widget, brought up the main UI, and the posiiton marker is at 0:00. But, when I hit play, it at least picked up from where I left off. However, leaving that posiition marker at 0 is very misleading - it should read that bookmark BEFORE I hit play (when the queue view is switched to and/or app is brought up). Do you see the same thing?
