Quite a few of my Led Zeppelin albums show up as being released in 2000. The CDs themselves were, but I'd rather when sorting by release date/year that the original date tag was respected.
It makes far more sense, particularly with older artists. For instance, House of the Holy was released in 1973. MusicBrainz Picard tags both the original date and date.

So what I am requesting is that instead of just sorted by ascending year, we can sort by ascending original release date. And in the Now Playing screen, have the original year or date displayed, rather than the standard date tag.
The custom tag display is useful, but it is limited to whatever tags are available in the legend. %tsst% and %originaldate% have no effect, but %aa% - one in the legend key - does work.

the only variables you can use are the ones listed. I have to add support for a specific tag in order for it to be accessible. Remember GMMP supports many formats other than mp3 so the other types of tags have to be considered
Original date is something i may add to via in now playing (changes dont take too much work) but i dont see the database/scanner changing for awhile. I recommend just changing the year tag if you want to sort by year
