Hello, It's been way too long that I dealt with my rather messy tagged music library, so I want to fix that. Now I came across the Artists, Album Artists and also the Artist sort and Album Artists sort Tag. Is there any information on how to best use these (especially for GMMP). What I found out so far: Artist Tags: Here's some things I found out so far: Right now I wanted to clear up all Artist and Album Artist fields from the different separators (& / feat. / and / vs /...) and separate them by semicolons. Album-Artist Tags: I understood, reading this guide gonemadmusicplayer.blogspot.com/p/dealing-with-split-albums.html , that the Album Artists need to be identical to group albums together (or if no album artist is present, Artist Tags have to be identical). How do you deal with this? My idea was in general to use the main Artist of the Album. But then if there is no main artist shall I use the Name "Various Artists" or which would be the standard? Remixes: For example Martin Garrix - Drown (Nicky Romero Remix). As I understood correctly, best way to get this shown under the artist Nicky Romero is to add Nicky Romero to the Artist field. Or is there any other field we could use for Remix Artists? Sort tags: What do they actually do or what can we use this for? Thanks for the help and best greets Patrick

Also what I noticed when tagging Artist Tags with semicolons:
In the now playing screen Artist do get separated by a comma. However it would be more convenient to get a following space between that comma.
Eg: Artist tag "Martin Garrix; Avicii" Will be displayed in now playing as "Martin Garrix,Avicii"
It would look smoother like this: "Martin Garrix, Avicii"

Or is there any other field we could use for Remix Artists? Sort tags: What do they actually do or what can we use this for? Use a decent tag editor to start. I recommend mp3tag personally, but there are others if you prefer. How you want to handle this is a personal choice. Consistency will be the key to getting the best results when using your library on multiple sources like a PC, mobile phone, and maybe even over a network share at home with Smart devices. As far as a separator goes, there are several options to consider. Again pick one and go with that. I have found with my devices the semicolon has been the best approach. AlbumArtist tags are a must to manage modern libraries. In many cases these will be the same as the Artist for single releases. But on any compilation or even a disc with just one or two duet tracks, the AlbumArtist tag will keep those Albums properly grouped together on most decent players. Again consistency is important, whatever you chosse to use now, keep using that in the future. I do have my compilations typically using "Various Artists" as the AlbumArtist tag in most cases. If this doesn't work, a new player might be in order. Not a problem with GMMP of course! Remixes are going to really need some thought on how to handle them. If you truly believe you would want to search for a track by Artist, and this name is currently only in the Title somewhere, then yhou will need to consider copying or moving that to the Artist field with a separator. But often these are a part of the "official" track title so I have hesitated to outright move them in my case. Sort tags do exactly what they say, they allow the library browser to display one thing (i.e. the Artist) while using something different when sorting the list (i.e. the ArtistSort). For example if you were to have "The Beatles" in your library you could shortne that to "Beatles" in the sort field to ensure it gets listed in the "B's" and not the "T's" area of the list. Some players like GMMP can do this automatically with articles like "A", "An", and "The" already. But the same can apply to ensure that and Artist "John Lennon" with ArtistSort "Lennon, John" shows up in the "L" part of your library. There are common sort tags for Composer, Artist, AlbumArtist, Album, and Title. Often these are not as widely supported by players, especially on the Andfroid platform for some reason. Ultimately all of these details are up to you. Many users don't add some or even any of these tag fields. They are usually the ones that complain the most when the browsing experience is not what they want. Compared to the audio data size, even with compressed formats, these tags are miniscule. And having more information doesn't create any issues. So I would recommend you complete as much as possible to ensure any player or manager software gives you the best experience.

by definition, every song on an album has the same album artist. Its the purpose of the tag. So yes anything you want grouped together needs the same album artist. As for the ArtistA,ArtistB. That is just how the database return the query.. its a limitation of sqlite (or at least the version android uses) gonemadmusicplayer.proboards.com/thread/1066/gmmp-3-custom-metadata-infoCustom metadata allows you to format the data however you want.. so you could set up something to replace commas with comma + space if you really wanted to. There is likely a post somewhere on here explaining how to do it

Thanks for your help and explanations. Then I'm definitely on the right way.
However I got some more questions to the sort tags: Could I use the sort tags for the remixers purpose, and also Alias purposes?
To grab my example again: Martin Garrix - Drown (Nicky Romero Remix)
Then I could set the Artist "Martin Garrix" and ArtistSort to "Martin Garrix; Nicky Romero".
Would this lead to the behavior that I get the Track listed under both artists? I also would prefer this as the Artist Tag doesn't get filled with the additional Remixer Artistname as in my previous example.
If this is possible I would assume this is also possible for aliases: An Interpret Releases Tracks under his main Name "Eric Prydz" and additional under an alias called "Pryda". Could I then simply add "Eric Prydz; Pryda" to the Artistsort or Albumartistsort tags to get it shown under both Names?

ArtistSort is only use for sorting

ArtistSort is only use for sorting I tried the above described procedure for remixers and it doesn't work. I tried to set the Artistsort to "Martin Garrix; Nicky Romero" and even only to "Nicky Romero", but it still shows only under the Artist "Martin Garrix". I really don't get what this field actually does. I understand that it's intended to show for example a Track with the Artist Tag "The Beatles" under the Artist "Beatles" when the Artistsort Tag ist set to "Beatles". But then why doesn't it work showing a Track with the Artist Tag "Martin Garrix" under the Artists "Nicky Romero" and "Martin Garrix" (or only under the Artist "Nicky Romero") when setting the Artistsort accordingly to "Martin Garrix; Nicky Romero" (or only "Nicky Romero").

Did you rescan your library after making the changes? Yes, I pushed the track to my music folder and did a scan. After making changes i deleted the track, cleared library and pushed it again to the folder + triggered a scan. did you turn on the sort modifier to use the sort tags? It doesnt use them by default Ah I didn't see this option. I activated it in both views (don't know why the option is toggable for different views), the Artist overview tab and the tab when I'm into a specific Artist. However it still does not seem to work, no matter what I set the Artistsort tag to, the track will still show only for the Artist specified in the Artist tag.

But note where you find it sorted in the list of other artists. If you changed it to just Nicky Romero, it should be found within the artists starting with N instead of M. But I don't think using two different sort tags with a separator will show a single Artist without a separated pair. GoneMAD can confirm but I have to assume the association is built when scanning for the library database, and need to match for these to be filled.

the sort tags are used only for sorting.. they will not display anywhere other than the tag editor
If you have a song with the tags: artist=The Artist B artistsort=Artist B, The along with 2 others with artist tags of Artist A and Artist C.. your list should look like
Artist A The Artist B Artist C
"But I don't think using two different sort tags with a separator will show a single Artist without a separated pair. GoneMAD can confirm but I have to assume the association is built when scanning for the library database, and need to match for these to be filled."
Multiple sort tags (of the same type of sort) are not supported. It would treat it as a single sort tag with a semi colon in it. Pretty sure. Sort tags were not part of the original design so when i added them in i made it work as best i could with the existing design, so there are some limitations when you get into advanced use cases.... either way if im reading the post right, he wants to display the sort tags.. which is not what the sort tags are for
edit 2:
You cannot use sort tags to associate a song with a different artist. When an artist is added to the database its added along side its artist sort field. All associations are done via the artist tag, but when it goes to sort the lists and you have the sort modifier on, it will sort by artistsort instead of artist

Either way the request is well outside of the intended function of the sort tag function. I'd recommend keeping these rare case remix artists listed in the Title.

So if I let's say have the Artist "The Beatles" with the sort tag "Beatles", it will show "The Beatles" listed within the B section when I scroll through the Artists. I thought it would really change the display of the Artist Name from "The Beatles" to "Beatles". Thanks also for the other explanations:) I'd recommend keeping these rare case remix artists listed in the Title. Unfortunately these are not that rare as you might think in Electronic music. I will just add them to the Artist Tag to get the behavior I want. It should be more or less clear which is the Remixer and which are the main artists. However there's another thing I'm wondering: If I change the id3 tags with mp3tag on my PC, will GMMP correctly get the changes? I don't want to clear the whole library, as the "date added" will be lost afterwards. I remember there were some Problems with externally changed tags where GMMP would show the old tags even though they were changed..

To make the changes to the tags, you will need to update the file, modification date. Otherwise GMMP won't see the change during the file scan.
