I recently switched to a bigger micro SD card and lost all my playlists and data like play counts etc. because my music folder went from /storage/0123-4567/Music to /storage/F1B7-17ED/Music
I'm changing to a new phone soon and was hoping there would be a way to prevent losing that this time (or any time I change SD card), either by doing something that would preserve the original file paths somehow or having the player recognise that it's the same things in a different root directory (if that's the right term). I'm pretty average with tech so I wouldn't really know where to start.

not easily but its possible. backup stats in app and it'll write a file to /storage/gmmp named like stats.bak ors omething like that. copy that file to the new device and open it up in a text editor with a "find and replace" feature. replace the old sdcard name with the new name (0123-4567 to F1B7-17ED) and make sure your music is located in the same location on the new card. You can then run a restore on the new device (put the stats.bak in /storage/gmmp on the new device)

This does work as I've recently done the same.

You can also change the SD-Card Serial Number (also called Volume ID) to the one from the old SD-Card. Then it works straight forward if you copy the music in the same folder structure to the new sd-card. I've used AOMEI Partition Assistant for that, which was very easy to use. (Here's the guide: www.diskpart.com/articles/change-sd-card-serial-number-7201.html?)There are also other alternatives out there to do this, for anyone interested: https://gist.github.com/dreamer2908/59066658df2844746e5feadba7a589a2
