Request: an excluding condition in rules with tags with multiple values
I have files tagged as Genre: Lyrical; Classicism or Oratorio; Baroque and am trying to set an "Orchestral" playlist where Genre doesn't contain Lyrical or Oratorio or Opera but it keeps on bringing lyrical pieces as long as they also have some other not-blacklisted genre.
Or is there a way to do it, already?
Thanks for the app - it's really cool!

Should be everything in the smart playlists to already do this?
Match all rules: 'genre contains Baroque' 'genre doesnt contain lyrical' 'genre doesnt contain oratorio' 'genre doesnt contain opera'
is that what you are currently running?

Nope. If the mp3 file is tagged with multiple genres, and one of them doesn't match the rule "doesn't contain", the smart playlist will include such file

sounds like a bug with multi (genre/artist/etc) queries. I will look into it. I do not see a need in any additional capabilities, because that ruleset listed above, if functioning probably should cover what you need
the multi genre/artist/etc gets stored in the database in multiple entires.. so likely the genre query is not grouping all the associated genres together when checking

this should get fixed in the 3.3.7 beta once released
'genre contains metal' AND 'genre doesnt contain death metal'
is now returning all my metal that is not death metal (most of my music is tagged with multi genre)

Minor issue (not involving smart lists): grouping by album in grids works, even when tracks have different, multiple genres, except when a genre name has parenthesis

By the way, here's a screenshot of my grid without labels (which used to be a winning advantage of BlackPlayer EX). It still has a faint shadow in the lower side of each album and a top navigation bar that I cannot hide but it works I'd appreciate if you would allow grids with different sizes, and a black Now Playing screen with the maximum available room for the album image It's a great app! I'd appreciate if you would allow grids with different sizes, and a black Now Playing screen with the maximum available room for the album image You can turn off the background in the three dot menu of the now playing screen. Set the colour to black in the UI settings. And if you choose metadata settings with minimal options there is more room for the art to be full width.

Im not quite following based off what you said parens in genres is kinda weird, but i guess that field can be used for any arbitrary tag

grid size (column count) can also be changed via the 3 dot menu on the tool bar.

Thanks, MotleyGord! Still getting the slightly smaller art but would rather now focus on enlarging the art in the landscape now playing

Thanks, GM! Weird, it is. I use "Favorite (sort of)" as a "4 stars" value in Genre, which is indexed by all players. I also use "℗ Trippy", for instance, to tag the file itself for a pop music playlist (to be shuffled), and "© Beethoven String Quartets" to tag for a classical music playlist (to be played straight). BTW, how about adding an argument to a file-based playlist to scramble it each time or not?
℗ and © work fine, go to the end of a genre list and can eventually be hidden. () within a genre gets the song displayed as a separate album in a grid.

The smart playlist stuff is super complicated, so its one of those things where i need concrete examples to test myself in order to see whats going on. Thanks

Thanks, MotleyGord! Still getting the slightly smaller art but would rather now focus on enlarging the art in the landscape now playing Are you using Layout1 or 2? In layout 1 the art is about as big as it can be for most screens while maintaining the proper dimensions and scale. Layout 2 the artwork may be smaller, depending on your screen ratio and details in the metadata. I'd try both to see which works best on your device.
