Am I understanding this correctly: When I toggle the shuffle button to blue, it shuffles all songs in my entire library. When I toggle the shuffle button to white, it shuffles the songs just within the genre of the song that's playing. When I toggle the shuffle button so it doesn't display, it turns off the shuffling.
What I want to do is shuffle all songs just within a single genre.
Another odd thing I've noticed: If I toggle through all the shuffle settings while a song is playing, it stops playing altogether. I can't get it to start again unless I go back to the navigation bar and make my selections all over again. What is that all about?
(In case it affects my questions, I do not use playlists.)
Thanks.

white = shuffle queue.. it shuffles anything in your queue. colored = shuffle collection.. anything in your music collection

But I don't use queues. I don't think I do anyway. For instance, to play all rock songs, I hit Genre/Rock/All songs and then set the shuffle icon to white. That seems to work, but I ask because I just noticed today that I was getting songs from other genres as well...and I also just noticed for the first time that there are different colors to the shuffle icon. Trial and error has led me to the method above, but I'm not sure this is the best way to do it.
For what it's worth, I'm not a power user. I have just two very basic needs. One - shuffle all rock songs and only rock songs when I'm on my elliptical machine. Two - play an album unshuffled (when, for instance, I'm listening to classical). Nothing any fancier than that. No queues, no playlists, no razzle-dazzle.
Thanks for any illumination you can provide.

if you play a folder, album, artist, or genre.. it creates a queue with everything you selected. The queue is everything the player is going to play.. think of it as the active playlist

So when I hit Genre/Rock/All Songs, it creates a queue of all those hundreds of songs? When I select a specific album to play, it creates a queue with just that album? Do all these queues reside somewhere and start filling up the memory in my Android phone, or are they erased every time I make another selection?
Thanks again for your help. Just trying to understand how to use this music player, which I really like, by the way. I downloaded and tested a dozen or so different music players a few weeks ago, and goneMAD was far and away the best for my needs. The full unlocked version is the only app I have ever paid for (though I am new to smartphones and iPads).

click on the queue tab and you will see what it contains and yes.. everything plays through the queues. Memory wise every song takes... 4 bytes in a queue? its just an index to the song in the database
yes there can only be only queue at at time.. so when you change the album/genre/etc.. it erases the queue and creates a new one.. the queue is basically just what GMMP uses to determine what song to play next.. when the queue finishes there is a setting (prefs -> queue -> on queue completion) that lets you do some cool stuff. I personally set mine to play random album.. so whenever i select something to play.. when that selection finishes it will pick a random album to play instead of just stopping

no prob. if you think of the queue as an "on the fly playlist" it helps a bit. just enqueue what you want to listen to and it will play.. whether thats a single genre.. or multiple albums or a random mix of some genres / albums / artists
