All of my mp3s have artist information in the tags.
After I have done a clean import, I have 6873 tracks under "Unknown Artist". The Database statistics state 14925 songs. These Unknown Artist tracks appear to be garbage entries - they have no tag information and when I try to play them, they do not play. They all seem to relate to other tracks that appear and play correctly under named artists. If I delete "Unknown Artist" through the artist view, it also deletes the good tracks under the named artist.
I am not certain and need to check my iTunes library, but 6873 may be the number of tracks that have the "Album Artist" tag set.
Can I remove these Unknown Artist entries from the database without deleting the good tracks.

if you delete through the artist view you are going to get all the albums as well. Artist view is "album artist" view by default and will list all the content of the albums. Menu -> artist will switch it to "artist view" and if you would delete unknown artists.. it would only get the tracks with unknown artist as the artist.
I believe that is why your good files were being deleted as well. Its pretty much impossible for one file to show up twice and one have good tags and the other not (there are cases of duplicates if the scanner is not setup correctly but the tags will be the same)
If you go to prefs -> scanner -> open scanner -> edit scan paths, you can set this to just your music folder.. most likely you have some hidden folder that has cached mp3s or something that are unplayable. I've seen apps like amazonmp3 do this. If you run a fresh scan with just your music folders.. i dont think all those garbage files will show up anymore
