I just encountered smart playlists and they are really, really powerful. Can I add smart playlists by editing a file (on a device with better possibilities to edit and a better keyboard)? Are smart playlists stored using ASCII or is it a binary format?
Secondly I would like to combine several smart playlists into a new one; the new one could for example contain all songs of the others combined, or the titles present in every of the others playlists. This would allow to create a hierarchy of playlists and the reuse of rules. Is this possible?

its an ascii xml file stored under gmmp\smart. There is a feature request somewhere on here asking to reference other smart playlists in a rule, so the ability to combine smart playlists isnt there yet but will most likely be added eventually

Is it this request ? trello.com/c/HbIEd5HLHoping someone could help with regards to a SPL question: looking to generate one provides "genre = podcast" which haven't been listened to in the past one day. I can see a parameter in there for entering a date, but this would essentially mean it's hard coded and isn't valid for the day after tomorrow (for example). Would like to create something that rolls with the previous day offering new unlisten to content.

Yes "Genre equals podcast" and "last played older than 1 day" although it sounds like you only care about new music that you havent listened to in the past day so you would also add another rule that is like "date added newer than 2 days" Newer and older than dont let you specify a date.. it uses relative numbers like X number of days/hours/months

Thanks! Trying this seems to give the opposite effect as it's returning tracks that have been listened to in the past day. It seems it needs to have "last played is NOT older than 1 day"
Essentially, if it has been played in the past day, I don't want it on the playlist?

i forget how exactly it translates the terms into the database queries since i wrote all that smart playlist stuff like 3 years ago, but newer than and older than are opposites.. so just switch them and it should give the desired effect. You will have to play around with the rules but what i gave you should be a good start

It's still returning 0 results even when switching that criteria around?
Am trying to get the smart playlist to show tracks NOT played in the last day - here's the setting:

if you never played the file it might mess with the last played query since i believe last played defaults to just being null instead of a time. You could replace that with something like playcount equals 0 That should show anything added in the last 2 days that was never played

Thought about using playcount, but when setting it to 0 it's going to prevent that track from appearing on the list?
I've tried the suggestion and it's not returning any results, I changed the parameters and numbers of day - expanding them by a lot to ensure something is captured but still yielding nothing so something doesn't seem right with the SPL criteria and how it works/processes?
In the last played section, could you add further criteria - similar to that of iTunes perhaps - which has stuff like "not in the past" etc?

The SPLs work just fine if you know how to set them up and you know your music collection. They have been heavily tested for 3+ years. There are no plans to add anything additional at this time.
looking at the recent played SPL. thats listed as last played newer than 14 days. That playlist will show stuff played within the last 14 days (a song must play completely to be marked as being played)
So if recently added newer than 2 days and playcount equals 0 shows nothing.. then you have something else wrong with, perhaps is your genre tagged with a lowercase p? Things in gmmp are typically case sensitive

Thanks!
Could I ask if you'd set up something up for yourself with the criteria/scenario I'm looking to achieve and screenshot the settings and the results the SPL returns for you please?
Also, have noticed with this type of SPL, it updates itself everytime you go to the list e.g. you generate a SPL with some criteria, within it there are then some tracks, you go back to it refreshes and all the tracks have changed?

i dont have podcasts and i dont change the music on my phone often so everything is probably a month or 2 old
SPLs will run a query to the database every time you open it, so yes they can change. If you sort by random and have a limit to the number of results they can look drastically different
