In my library I use both "Album artist" and "Artist" tags, but Gonemad apparently does not read the first. As a result, the view "Album artist" is identical to the view "Artist", showing albums sorted by Artist per track instead of Album artist. This seems like a very basic function that is not correctly implemented?

sounds like your content is not tagged correctly. album artist tag has been supported since the app came out in 2011. Your files need to follow the tag specifications www.mp3tag.de/en/picard.musicbrainz.org/

They are definitely used accurately in my case. I have a mix of mp3, ALAC, and FLAC files. It helps further if you include an accurate Year field as well.
