Since I know I will be forced to buy a new phone in the coming years, I hope to create long-term playlists and ratings inside GMM as I listen. It is my one and only player. Any suggestions on how to backup, every few months, my library's playlists and ratings on my Windows 10 PC to protect would be most appreciated.

using an external app / program like musicbee is probably your best bet. Syncing is nothing i do myself so someone else here may have a better recommendation or can go into more detail

Not better, for sure. I do it by hand every few days. I copy the stats.xml (settings.xml too, if I make any changes to the settings) file to the SD card (because of encryption issues when trying to pull it straight from internal storage...). Then I plug in my mobile and drag and drop it into a backup folder. I do the same thing with the smart folder.
Just this week I installed a custom version of Android onto my mobile, and was able to restore everything* except the colors of the UI theme in Gmmp.

Thanks to both of you. I notice that all of the playlists I create on GMM show up in the GMM playlist folder when I examine it on Wiindows 10 explorer. Is there a way of importing these playlists to a new phone on which I have moved my music and have reinstalled GMM? That would pretty much solve my desire to create GMM playlists that I can then drag or otherwise copy over to a new phone.

copy the contents of /storage/gmmp/playlists over to the same location on the new device. if the new devices folder structure is the same then there is no issue. If the device has a different sdcard the ID/path of the sdcard would be different but that can be fixed with a simple find/replace all using a text editor

I'm not 100% sure about the playlists, but I do know that the smart playlists can be copied over to a new device and work perfectly. Worst case scenario, you'd have to open the playlist files and run a replace all on the song location path.
