I have mine set to show it while playing. But yeah, you cannot see it until you start playing the song.

Can you change the duration a song has to play to be counted ?

looking at the code for 2.x, the playcount only increases once a song is complete.
In the 3.0 alpha i also added a skipcount. Neither are configurable yet but i do plan on adding a slider in the settings so you can set the percentage (or time.. not sure yet) to flag something as played and something as skipped

Logic states: You either heard the song or you did not. Can you really say you've heard a song if you have not heard all of it? Who wants a partial play count static?
The Windows Media Player 10 Series used to track things like Play counts in the day time, in the night time, on the weekend, on week days. All of this was nice yet not exactly useful to the user. The end goal was just to be able to have a more pleasing random playback algorithm. Skip counts and ratings also played an important role.
Though I'm sure some do not agree with such logic and would find the option to change when the count is taken very nice, I say put it on the very bottom of the task list.

If one listens to 75% of a track and then skips to the next... many would want that to increment the playcount. Right now it does not. Playcount only increments when the full track was listened to and was not skipped
