I had a number of issues with the latest update. Firstly, the market kept telling me there was an update but when I looked at the Gonemad music player page there was no update button only open or uninstall. Eventually I uninstalled and reinstalled (three times) before I could get what I expected i.e. no message about an available update because I had the latest version.
By this time I had lost the database and had to do a rescan, but the scanner claimed to have found 1968 songs. As far as I am aware I only have 980 on my sd card and I don't think I have enough space for 1968. Looking at the album and song lists everything looks ok so I'm not sure why the reported number was so high.

sometimes your device gets notified there is an update, but the download servers dont fully have it available to download yet. It will just show "Open" and "Uninstall" if that is the case. Usually if you wait around a half hour the update button will show up.
As for the number of songs scanned, you can verify the # stored in the database by going to the scanner.. hit menu -> database stats
from the numbers you listed 1968 is about 2x 980 and if you did a fresh install, there would be 2 scan paths listed by default /mnt/sdcard/Music and /mnt/sdcard/ (you can remove /mnt/sdcard/ if you dont need it)
So there might be a chance that the scanner is going through your songs twice, but if the database stats show 980, you are good to go and dont have to worry.
Also one other thing i thought of. If you had "only scan new files" unchecked, it would definitely scan in the files twice if you had both /mnt/sdcard/music and /mnt/sdcard/ set under the scan paths
OR
if /mnt/sdcard/ was listed under the scan paths.. it may have picked up extra sound files from other apps you have installed

Thanks I get the right number when scanning now, however it seems to have gone back to splitting up all the albums in multiple folders again like the version a few updates ago. When scanning I checked "Multi-Folder Albums", were there any other settings needed? I lost all my preferences as well and had to set them up again, I forgot what I did before to get the albums all grouped together when they are in multiple folders.
cheers

be sure to check delete database if you didnt have the multi-folder albums checked the first time you did the scan

Something is definitely not quite right. I am pretty sure I checked the delete database option before, but I have just scanned again, twice.
Both times the delete database and the ignore folders with .nomedia options were selected. Once I selected the Multi-Folder options and once I did not.
When that option was not selected there was some duplication as with earlier versions of GMMP. This I understand and can explain which ones are duplicated. But when the option was selected the duplication was worse. One album was split into individual tracks despite the fact they all have the same artist, are in the same folder and display as one single album when the multi folder option was not selected

ah.. yea i see the issue. My changes to speed up the scanner broke the the multi-folder album option. In order to speed up the scan I delay inserting the entries into the database until around 100 or so files get scanned. Inserting 100 at once is much faster than 1 at a time. But since there is that delay.. the check to see if the album already exists before creating a new one breaks

for now i'll just make it just go back to the old method if multi-album is enabled.. the faster scan will only be applied if its disabled
