Android 9, Nokia 8
GMMP 3.0.4
I think this is by design, but for me it's awkward. The left hand Hamburger menu button disappears when viewing down through the selection hierarchy. This means that to get back to a screen with that menu item, I have to traverse back up the selection hierarchy. It would be preferable that such a menu is always available so that quickly getting back to the queue or now playing views is possible.

A left swipe to get access to those menu items would be OK. Thanks for looking into it. I wondered if whatever triggered the left arrow in the other views could be reconfigured so that instead of replacing the menu 'button', the arrow sat to the right of that menu button.

the button is part of the toolbar api that google provides. Its basically the arrow or hamburger menu, then the title area, then the 3 dot menu area (where some menu actions can show on the toolbar if there is room)
for 3.0 im mostly sticking with the apis that google provides or well supported 3rd party library. 2.x had a lot of custom views (the holo layout was mostly all custom) that was very hard to maintain and would break fairly regularly when updating other things

Makes sense, best to stick with the 'standard' if possible. Having the ability to swipe the menu into view seems like a workable compromise if possible.
