So for the 1st time in 5 months I have had my Archos device playing with Gmmp for just over 24 hours solid, no crashes, no stopping of tracks playing and no skipping/stuttering of tracks !!!
This is due to now using the EQ (2band) which turns on gmmp audioengine and loading a playlist of 689 tracks which are all FLAC.
Why are FLAC files working perfectly? It also seems from 2 days constant checking, the tracks causing problems are mainly mp3 tracks of 320kbps, a couple were 244(vbr).
Any idea why its working so perfectly with FLAC ?

if you just have gapless playback enabled it'll use the audioengine (in case you dont want to use the eq). Flac automatically uses the engine since its not supported by android up until 3.1 i believe.
I'm glad you were able to get some smooth playback
The difference between mp3 playback and flac playback is gmmp has a flac decoder built into it (libflac), for mp3 and aac I have to use whatever comes on the device. This is due to mp3 and aac being heavily patented. The fees for packing in an mp3 decoder is very high and I dont want to risk a lawsuit.
So basically flac i have complete source code to and therefore it will work the same on every device. Mp3 is a wildcard since some manufacturers like to modify these libraries.
That being said.. i dont think that is the cause of the skipping, because I'd experienced the skipping on my 5IT with ogg as well.. which I provide a decoder for. Maybe there is a difference in CPU usage between the mp3 and flac? I am going to assume the skips you get are never at the same point of a song?
I banged my head against a wall for about a week awhile back trying to figure out the random skipping (all the time wasnt a loss because I ended up with some pretty optimized code). I will take a look at it again sometime soon and do some heavier testing with flac to see if i can spot a difference

So by reducing all my mp3 tracks above 256kbps (50gb's! of my collection) down to 192kbps seems to have solved all my stuttering problems. Its not really the soloution I wanted, reducing quality, but works.
And now I can use up to 6 band EQ (tested so far), crossfade and gappless, actually appreciating gmmps features now ;D
Having some missing album art issues now, mainly FLAC, will be testing this next.

i wonder if it has something to do with reading from the hard disk.. smaller files = less skipping perhaps

Ok, so It didnt solve all my issues, still some tracks skipping but alot less. Gone back to the default player now 1.2.4 is released, so far no stopping after FLAC tracks to mp3, but missing crossfade already

Ugh, I'm having a skipping issue too. Just bought an 250gb archos g9 because I read madmusicplayer be used without skipping. I've maxed out the buffers and tried gapless on and off - still skipping. Most of my collection is VBR mp3s. May have to return it if I can't find a solution.

turn off gapless, crossfade, replaygain(if you are using the 1.3 beta), and the equalizer and give it a try

Checked those settings - still skipping. Governor is set on performance.

what filetypes you playing?
with those settings mp3, m4a, and ogg will use the build in mediaplayer (so playback should be no diff than the stock, non archos, music app
flac isnt natively supported until android 3.1 so it has to use the gmmp audioengine for playback

mp3s - mostly VBR encoded with lame, I' haven't actually tried the stock player - will see if it acts differently today.

My Archos 70 250gb skips and stutters when that annoying media scanner associated with the stock player is running, when it stops the stuttering stops. It may be the culprit on your player as well

my stock player does skip - don't see the media scanner service running. Anyway to make sure it's not in the background? I am on a custom rom, maybe I should go back to the stock? If it still skips, then I guess I have a defective archos?
