I serve music to my smartphone through a Subsonic installation, I use the Subsonic client on the smarthpone only to cache the music locally but I then play it back (and add it to the library) in GMMP.

Q will be fine because google is not enforcing it until R, where it will completely break the app. I originally had plans on maintaining both 2.x and 3.0 but if google insists on pushing this horrid SAF api on every app.. 2.x will be abandoned completely (i'll put up a legacy version on google play but it'll be limited to Q and below) and i will have to spend a lot of time rewriting things in 3.0 (so rewriting for a 3rd time.. yay). Google is 100% making the wrong decision on pushing the SAF and its going to make the android experience completely awful for a large portion of the population. It adds 0 extra security over using the File api.

Argh... So Android 10 is going to be fine (still waiting for OnePlus to send it to my 6T) but 11 is going to be problematic.
Do you think it will be impossible for me to keep doing what I'm doing (music cached with Subsonic and then added to GMMP local library)? Even rooted? If that would be the case, it would be a serious let down for me. Not your fault, I mean a serious let down from Google that's going to "iOSsize" Android to the point where it loses all its strengths.

gmmp 3.0 should be fine when 11 roles out.. or eventually will. it isnt exactly clear when the restrictions are going to be enforced.. but assuming they enforce it when the app sets its target api level to android 10/11.. then gmmp will be fine.
